I would rather sit on a pumpkin, and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion.―Henry David Thoreau
Second to chasing love there is probably no subject field more sung over that being lonely. Hundreds of thousands of songs feature a morose victim of lost love longing for what was or what might have been. Hundreds of thousands of pop songs, several hundreds if you include County and Western portray loneliness or “sheltering in place” as we call it at present. Undoubtedly sad songs go back to the “Hurrian Hymn No. 6” from ancient Syria but in America we have been lamenting solitude since the Puritans relaxed and music flowed in the new world. At the Los Angeles Public Library we have a wonderful source of sad soli-tunes in our Freegal offerings. As you might guess the tunes are free, they are plentiful and they stream 24 hours a day just as long as you have a library card. The new format also offers genres and playlists you can choose and stream out of your shelter devices and if one tune strikes your woeful fancy you can download it on the spot (five songs per week), and cry again another time. Here are just some random choices from my files.
