My name is Lynne Thompson, Poet Laureate for the City of Los Angeles and I’m so happy to welcome listeners to this installment of Poems on Air, a podcast supported by the Los Angeles Public Library. Every week, I’ll present the work of poets I admire, poets who you should know, and poets who have made a substantial and inimitable contribution to the art and craft of poetry.

LYNNE THOMPSON: In last week’s episode, I spoke about a California writing conference I was fortunate to attend. Another one, Community of Writers in the Olympic Valley, has secured the teaching services of the most compelling writers for more than 50 years. When I attended, the much-lauded and generous Lucille Clifton was one of those teachers. Her down-to-earth demeanor and usually-brief but always poignant verse enchanted the attendees and now, years after her passing, con-tinues to instruct and intrigue readers wherever they encounter her work.

LYNNE THOMPSON: Today’s poem is "telling our stories" by Lucille Clifton

telling our stories

the fox came every evening to my door
asking for nothing. my fear
trapped me inside, hoping to dismiss her
but she sat till morning, waiting.

at dawn we would, each of us,
rise from our haunches, look through the glass
then walk away.

did she gather her village around her
and sing of the hairless moon face,
the trembling snout, the ignorant eyes?

child, i tell you now it was not
the animal blood i was hiding from,
it was the poet in her, the poet and
the terrible stories she could tell.
