The Los Angeles Public Library is pleased to be partnering with Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles to offer an official LAPL/GSGLA patch! This patch will educate Scouts about the variety of in-person and online resources we provide, and help them understand the vital roles libraries play in building strong communities.

The Los Angeles Public Library provides free and easy access to information, ideas, books and technology that enrich, educate and empower every individual in our city's diverse communities. This patch will educate Scouts about the variety of in-person and online resources the library provides, and help them understand the vital roles libraries play in building strong communities.

The Los Angeles Public Library is one of the largest public library systems in the United States. We serve the 3 million people that live in the City of Los Angeles with our 72 Library Branches, Central Library, and 24/7 access through our website.

For: Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Cadette, Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts

Purpose: To introduce and familiarize Girl Scouts to the Los Angeles Public Library and its mission through an exploration of these three learning objectives:

  • How does the library serve as a research portal, both online and in-person?
  • How does the library serve as a cultural hub?
  • How does the library serve as a community center?

Before You Begin: There will be a mix of both online and in-person requirements in order to complete this patch. The culminating experience is a self-guided tour of the Central Library in Downtown Los Angeles.

Upon Completion: Have your Troop Leader verify that all requirements have been fulfilled. Patches will be available for purchase in person at the Library Store inside Central Library. Questions can be sent to girlscouts@lapl.org.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the program appropriate for all levels of Girl Scouts?

Yes! The program was designed for Scouts of all levels, from Daisies to Ambassadors. The number of requirements to be completed varies based on level.

Does library staff verify that the requirements have been completed?

No. Verification that the patch program has been completed will be determined by individual Troop Leaders.

Where do we get the patch?

The patch is available for in-person purchase only at the Library Store located inside Central Library.

Do we really have to go to Central Library?

Yes, visiting Central Library is a key requirement of the patch program! Central Library is one of the crown jewels of the city and we feel it’s important for Scouts to experience their local community branches as well as a large central facility. Plus, it’s the only way to get the patch. We promise you’ll be glad you came!

That patch is amazing, but I’m not a Girl Scout. Can I still get one?

The patch, designed by Photo Friends President Amy Inouye, is amazing, so the Library Store also has a non-Girl Scout version available for purchase.
