Children Chatting Podcast: Discussion between Chad Sell and the Children Chatting Kids

[Music intro]

SEBASTIEN: Hello everyone! You’re listening to the Children Chatting With Authors Podcast. Today we're here with special guest Chad Sell author of the well-revered graphic novel the Cardboard Kingdom.

KASSI: Hi, my name is Kassi. Is the Cardboard Kingdom ever going to become a TV show?

CHAD SELL: I think that would be super cool, but there aren't any, um, any plans right now of it being made.

KASSI: Why not?

CHAD SELL: Um, that's sort of beyond, and, most authors control. It takes like a movie studio or a TV studio to make that happen. Yeah, I, I wish I could animate something by myself, but I can't make a cartoon all by myself. Yeah, no problem.

SEBASTIEN: Hello my name is Sebastien.

CHAD SELL: Hi good meet you.

SEBASTIEN: Are you going to make a sequel to the Cardboard Kingdom?

CHAD SELL: Um we are working on it, but it's gonna be a little while. It took us three years to make book one, so it might take as long to make book two. So…

SEBASTIEN: Will it have the same characters?

CHAD SELL: Um yeah. We're planning on doing the same group of characters and same authors, yeah.

SEBASTIEN: Thank you.

CHAD SELL: Yeah, of course! Thanks for reading the book.

EVA: Hello my name is Eva. Why did you make your story a comic book?

CHAD SELL: Yeah. What I like about comics, is that anyone can just draw on a piece of paper. Um, you can tell a lot of a cool story and share it with people without huge resources without a film budget, without a CGI team, you know, but to get like a mainstream publisher to publish a book-length project, um, it you know it does take a few years, and, you know, luckily I had a whole team of collaborators to work with, which made the whole process a lot less lonely. Because, you know, during…there are there so many periods of uncertainty when you're waiting for the next big step to happen in the process, and having a team behind you like where you're all able to like share your insights and encouragement was so helpful and such a booster throughout it all.

EVA: How many other writers were there?

CHAD SELL: Yeah. It was a total of ten other writers. Yeah.

Thanks so much! Well, I'm glad you have a book club for like-minded kids to get together and talk about stuff they like that's really great!
