Ernesto Cisneros is the nationally acclaimed author of Efrén Divided. He was born and raised in Santa Ana, California, where he still teaches. As an author, he believes in providing today’s youth with an honest depiction of characters with whom they can identify.

Ernesto Cisneros es el aclamado autor del libro Efrén Dividido. Nació y fue criado en Santa Ana, California, donde también es maestro. Como autor, cree en empoderar a la juventud a través de la representación de personajes con los que se puedan identificar.

Ernesto Cisneros will be one of the featured authors at the Los Angeles Libros Festival, a free bilingual book festival for the whole family. L.A. Libros Fest will be streamed live on YouTube on Friday, September 23, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The Festival will be in-person at Central Library in Downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, September 24, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with select Saturday programs streamed live on YouTube.

Libros Fest ofrecerá dos días de programación en vivo con cuentacuentos, autores locales e internacionales, talleres de arte, conciertos y mucho más. L.A. Libros Fest será transmitido en línea en vivo vía YouTube el viernes 23 de septiembre de 9 a.m. a 12 p.m y en persona en la Biblioteca Central de Los Ángeles el sábado 24 de septiembre de 11 a.m. a 4 p.m., con programas selectos transmitidos también en vivo por YouTube.

Our tagline this year is Read, Dream and Celebrate en dos idiomas. How do you think your books and stories help us accomplish this? / El tema del festival este año es Read, Dream and Celebrate (lee, sueña y celebra) en dos idiomas. ¿Cómo crees que tus libros e historias nos ayudan a lograr esto?

I grew up at a time when students were taught NOT to speak Spanish in school. Sadly, this really led me to start thinking that there was something wrong/inferior to my native language. Now that I know better, I choose to include lots of Spanish in my work… enough so that kids will feel a sense of pride seeing their home language featured in a positive light.

Crecí en un tiempo en que a los estudiantes les enseñaban a NO hablar español en la escuela. Esto realmente me llevó a pensar que había algo malo/inferior con mi lengua materna. Ahora que sé mejor, me aseguro de incluir el español mucho más en mi trabajo... lo suficiente para que los niños se sientan orgullosos de ver su lengua materna presentada de manera positiva.

What are some of the things you do to bring to life the world you’ve imagined? / ¿Cuáles son algunas de las cosas que tú haces para hacer realidad el mundo que has imaginado?

I strive to be as authentic as possible. That means taking all of the things I hold dear to me and highlighting them in my work. The hope is that readers can join me in celebrating all of the wonderful things our culture brings.

Mi deseo es ser lo más auténtico posible. Eso significa apreciar todas las cosas que tengo en mi vida y destacarlas en mi trabajo. Mi deseo es que cualquiera que lea mis libros pueda celebrar todas las cosas maravillosas que tiene nuestra cultura.

What stories inspired you as a young reader? / ¿Cuáles historias te inspiraron cuando eras niño/a?

I really wasn’t much of a reader…mostly because I did not see books with characters that looked like me or underwent adventures similar to mine. This is why it took me so long to become a published author. I wish diverse books were around when I was young.

Realmente no leía mucho de niño…principalmente porque no había libros con personajes que se parecieran a mí o que tuvieran aventuras similares a las mías. Es por eso que me tomó tanto tiempo ser un autor publicado. Me hubiera gustado tener libros con personas diversas cuando era joven.

If your book was turned into a movie/series, who would you cast? / Si tu libro fuera adaptado al cine, ¿Cuáles actores elegirías para interpretar a tus personajes?

I honestly do not know who that would be. My hope is that they would find a Mexican immigrant family in the film. I’m sure they can find adorable kids to play Max and Mía.

Sinceramente, no sé quién sería. Mi esperanza es que encuentren una familia de inmigrantes mexicanos para la película. Estoy seguro de que pueden encontrar niños adorables para los personajes de Max y Mía.

What advice would you give to young writers? / ¿Qué consejo le darías a alguien que aspira a ser escritor?

Read. Read. And write what you know and love. Your stories are unique and just as important as anyone else’s. There IS a place for your stories in the Literary World.

Lee. Lee. Y escribe todo lo que conoces y amas. Tus historias son únicas y tan importantes como las de cualquier otra persona. Si hay un lugar para tus historias en el mundo literario.

How did you feel the first time your work was published? How was your publishing journey? / ¿Cómo te sentiste la primera vez que un libro tuyo fue publicado? ¿Cómo fue el proceso para lograr que tu libro fuera publicado?

It was a dream come true for sure. I spent fourteen long years trying to publish my work and had gotten to a point where I really did not think it would actually happen. This made the experience more meaningful for me, and I do not take this opportunity for granted.

Sin duda, fue un sueño hecho realidad. Pasé catorce años tratando de publicar mi trabajo y había llegado a un punto en el que realmente no creía que sucedería. Esto hizo que la experiencia fuera más significativa para mí y estoy agradecido por la oportunidad.

What are some challenges you encounter when writing? / ¿Cuáles son algunos de los retos que encuentras al escribir?

One of the most challenging things about writing is trying to figure out what the story is really about. I find creating characters to be the easiest part. Finding a challenge, plot, or adventure for them is really tricky for me. It needs to be an adventure that will ultimately make the character a better person, while also being entertaining to the reader.

Una de las cosas más desafiantes de escribir es el descubrimiento de la historia. Creo que crear personajes es la parte más fácil. Encontrar un desafío, trama o aventura para los personajes es realmente complicado para mí. Tiene que ser una aventura que haga al personaje una persona mejor y al mismo tiempo entretenga al lector.

What was your experience like getting your book translated into Spanish or English? / ¿Cuál ha sido tu experiencia al lograr traducir tus libros al español o inglés?

The Spanish translation of Efren Divided is scheduled for Jul 4th of 2023. I am blessed to have had the amazing David Bowles doing the translation. (I initially tried doing it myself, but with my limited spanish and time, it simply was not possible)
Having the book translated was a dream come true. My parents were finally able to read my book. More importantly, they were able to see the influence they have had in my life. The book is an ode to them both.

La traducción al español de Efrén Divided será publicada el 4 de julio de 2023. Tengo la suerte de tener al increíble David Bowles haciendo la traducción. (Al principio traté de hacerlo yo mismo, pero con mi español y tiempo limitados, simplemente no fue posible)
Tener el libro traducido fue un sueño hecho realidad. Mis padres finalmente pudieron leer mi libro. Más importante aún, pudieron ver la influencia que han tenido en mi vida. El libro es una oda a ellos dos.

How do you think libraries make our world a better place? / ¿Cómo crees que las bibliotecas hacen de nuestro mundo un mundo mejor?

Libraries are a source of support like no other. It’s really the only place where everyone is welcomed. A place where we can all find books that mirror our own lives and make us feel accepted. It is also a place where we can escape to any land, any world we wish. A place where time travel is possible. A place where we can experience life through someone else's shoes. A place filled with magic.

Las bibliotecas son una fuente de apoyo como ninguna otra. Es realmente el único lugar donde todos son bienvenidos. Un lugar donde todos podemos encontrar libros que reflejan nuestras propias vidas y nos hacen sentir aceptados. También es un lugar donde podemos escapar a cualquier lugar o cualquier mundo que deseemos. Un lugar a donde podemos viajar por el tiempo. Un lugar donde podemos experimentar la vida a través de los zapatos de otra persona. Un lugar lleno de magia.

What are you working on now? / ¿Cuáles son tus proyectos futuros? ¿En qué estás trabajando?

I am working on a book about the trials and tribulations of growing up a latchkey kid in the city of Santa Ana. I am enjoying journeying back to my childhood and reliving a lot of defining moments in my life. I really hope children all over the world will enjoy these tales.

Estoy trabajando en un libro sobre las pruebas y tribulaciones de crecer como un niño latchkey en la ciudad de Santa Ana, CA. Estoy disfrutando viajar de regreso a mi infancia y revivir muchos momentos decisivos en mi vida. Realmente espero que los niños de todo el mundo disfruten de estos cuentos.

Efrén Nava’s Amá is his Superwoman - or Soperwoman, named after the delicious Mexican sopes his mother often prepares. Both Amá and Apá work hard all day to provide for the family, making sure Efrén and his younger siblings Max and Mía feel safe and loved. But Efrén worries about his parents; although he's American-born, his parents are undocumented. His worst nightmare comes true one day when Amá doesn't return from work and is deported across the border to Tijuana, México. Now more than ever, Efrén must channel his inner Soperboy to help take care of and try to reunite his family.
