John Ildefonso
Community-generated art creates visibility and intentional space for dialogue to promote greater understanding and connections among individuals. These connections drive my art practice, and I have been teaching art in schools, libraries, and museums for almost twenty years.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, I am the proud product of public education and my community. Like many in this city, I grew up surrounded by multiple languages: I was immersed both in my family's Zapotec- and Spanish-speaking community and in multilingual 1980s Los Angeles. The central themes represented in my paintings highlight the resilience of modern indigenous communities and community migrations across contemporary borders and often include references to language and text.
